Srijoni Green Producer Company Limited: Empowering Tribal Farmers, Cultivating Sustainable Livelihoods

Nestled in the heart of Kadamhir village under the Md. Bazar block in Birbhum District, Srijoni Green Producer Company Limited has been scripting a remarkable transformation in the lives of tribal farmers since its inception. With active support and guidance from NABARD, this Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) has become a beacon of hope for thousands of farmers and artisans, ensuring fair prices, sustainable income, and an assured market for their produce.

Planting the Seeds of Change

In 2014, Srijoni embarked on a groundbreaking initiative under the Tribal Development Fund (TDF), introducing a plantation project that has since reshaped the agricultural landscape of tribal communities. Targeting farmers with one acre of land each, the project began with a systematic approach—land identification, soil testing, and preparation for cultivation. Soon, vast expanses of tribal land flourished with cashew nut and mango orchards, paving the way for long-term economic stability.

From soil testing to seedling plantation, fertilization, and eventual fruiting, Srijoni took charge of the entire process, ensuring the best practices were followed. The farmers, who were once vulnerable to middlemen’s exploitation, found relief as Srijoni directly purchased the harvested fruits at fair prices. This approach eliminated unfair pricing practices and secured a steady income for the tribal farmers.

Expanding Footprints, Transforming Lives

This ambitious project has successfully been implemented across Nalhati-1, Murarai-1, Rampurhat-1, Dubrajpur, Rajnagar, and Md. Bazar in Birbhum district, as well as Pakur and Maheshpur in Jharkhand. With over 3,500 farmers benefitting and 3,500 acres of cashew nut and mango plantations thriving, Srijoni has laid the foundation for economic independence within these marginalized communities.

From Farm to Market: The Cashew Revolution

Recognizing the need for value addition, Srijoni expanded its efforts in 2018 by setting up a Cashew Nut Processing Unit. This move aimed to empower WADI farmers by ensuring they reaped the full benefits of their hard work. By 2019, the company received a Rs. 50 lakh sanction from NABKISAN, enabling the procurement of improved machinery and raw materials, further streamlining the cashew processing operation.
Today, over 2 metric tons of raw cashew nuts are processed each year. Cashews cultivated in WADI fields are aggregated and transported to the state-of-the-art processing unit, where they are transformed into premium quality nuts, ready for branding, packaging, and marketing. This initiative has not only increased the farmers’ earnings but has also positioned Srijoni’s cashews as a sought-after product in national and international markets.

Beyond Agriculture: Capacity Building and Training

Srijoni’s commitment extends beyond farming and processing. Recognizing the importance of knowledge in sustainable agriculture, the company regularly conducts training programs for farmers on modern cultivation techniques, soil health, organic farming, and post-harvest management. These initiatives equip farmers with the skills to enhance productivity and embrace climate-resilient agricultural practices.

A Sustainable Future

Srijoni Green Producer Company Limited has redefined the way tribal farmers engage with agriculture and the marketplace. By eliminating intermediaries, ensuring fair pricing, promoting sustainable farming, and creating value-added products, Srijoni has transformed agriculture into a viable, profitable, and dignified profession for thousands of tribal families.
